Slow journey for 2 Palo Verde generators

By Tim Steller and Susanna Caņizo
ARIZONA DAILY STAR

The steam generators destined for the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station have arrived in Puerto Peņasco, Sonora, and Mexican officials say one is scheduled to head north at the end of this weekend.

A barge carried the generators from Guaymas to Puerto Peņasco, commonly known as Rocky Point, on an especially high tide Sunday.

Mexico's Federal Preventive Police are planning to guide one of the generators on roads north from Puerto Peņasco Sunday night, said Commander Hector Ibarra Guillen.

Sheri Foote, spokeswoman for Arizona Public Service, which owns the generators, would not confirm that date. Foote said the first generator would leave Puerto Peņasco sometime next week.

It will take about five days for the generator to be moved from Puerto Peņasco to the border at Sonoyta, she said.

Both generators will be sent north over the next two months and will be carried on the back of a state-of-the-art transporter with 26 axles and 224 wheels.

Each generator is 75 feet long, has a diameter of 24 feet and weighs 800 tons. They are not radioactive.

They will travel at night in Mexico and Arizona from about 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. until they reach Gila Bend, Foote said. Then they will travel on county roads during the day until they reach Palo Verde.

Traffic on Mexican Highway 8 and Arizona 85 will be blocked while the generators move along at 3 to 4 mph. Foote said the transporter will pull off the highways every few hours to allow traffic to pass by.
